Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a condition characterized by atherosclerotic occlusive
disease of the lower extremities. On May 7-8, 2003, a Consensus Development Conference
was held to review the current knowledge regarding PAD in diabetes. After a series of
lectures by experts, they conclude that it is important to diagnose PAD in patients with
diabetes to elicit symptom, prevent disability and limb loss, and identify a patient at high risk
of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death.
