Modification of a strain of mouse-adapted scrapie by passage through rats

A mouse-adapted strain of scrapie which had been passaged 5 times through rats produced
modified clinical signs and histological lesions in the brain when inoculated back into mice.
Alterations in the clinical signs included the occurrence of scratching at the base of the neck
and over the shoulders in a proportion of mice, and a distinct tendency for the animals to
become fat and hypersensitive as the disease progressed. The histological modification
